About Us

"Literacy is understanding, evaluating, using and engaging with written text to participate in society, to achieve one's goals, and to develop one's knowledge and potential." -PIAAC

Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that approximately 43% of Australians aged 15-74 years read at a Level 2 or below.

This means that their literacy level falls below the international standard required for participation in work, education, and society.

A low level of literacy is different from being illiterate and broadly speaking, means that the person’s ability to read, write and understand information may prevent them from being completely informed or able to fully participate in society.

The Reading Society primarily brings people together to raise funds through social events and direct donations or through the donation of books & magazines. The monies raised can then be channelled towards the provision of interpretation services, supporting marginalised adults to seek assistance with literacy support or building literacy levels through more traditional channels such as early childhood education. Book & magazine donations can be distributed to the most appropriate target audiences to encourage general literacy.
